A recent victim of "deferred
maintenance," and lackluster bookings, the current owners, lead by Steve Ullman of Grant Parking, are looking to
sell the landmark and its surrounding property (parking lots for the most
part) for a housing and retail development. They are showing NO INTEREST in
preserving the Palladium.
It should be remembered that Mr.
Ullman showed the same level of respect for Hollywood history when he
demolished the nearby historic Brown Derby restaurant, and proposed to
build a modern glass box building next to Grauman's Chinese (a proposal
defeated by Hollywood Heritage).
The question arises: Where is our
city's political leadership and why are we having to fight for a
building that was supposed to be protected by the Hollywood
Redevelopment Plan? This is the question that MUST be asked of our two
council candidates Eric Garcetti and Michael Woo.
We need a call to action to save a
site which was home in the 1940s to the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and its
"boy singer," Frank Sinatra and continued to be a major venue
for the most important music from the 1940s to the 1970, including the
1960s when Lawrence Welk used the facility to broadcast his weekly
"Champagne Music" television programs. |
